Requesting Police and Emergency Services

The Police Department provides vital life and safety services to city residents 24/7.  It can be difficult to understand what level of service should be utilized when contacting police and emergency services.  The recommendations below are meant to clarify when to call 9-1-1 and when to call crime check. 

When to call 9-1-1

• If you are the victim of or witness a crime that is in progress or has just occurred.
• If you are the victim of a crime and the suspect remains in the area.
• If you need immediate police response because you have been threatened or feel unsafe.
• If you need to report a fire.
• If there is a medical emergency.

When to text 9-1-1

• If you need to report an emergency and don't feel safe to call 9-1-1
• If you are the victim of a crime and unable to call 911 because the suspect is still nearby
• If you are hearing or speech impaired and do not have TTY
• If you need law enforcement or medical assistance and are unable to safely call 9-1-1

When to call Crime Check (509) 456-2233

• If you are the victim of a crime or witness a crime that is no longer in progress. 
• If you have information about a past crime.
• To add information to a previous crime report.
• To report a crime after the fact which does not require an officer/deputy at the scene.
• File an Online Report with Crime Check (Spokane Regional Emergency Communications)

Tips for Calling Crime Check

• Stay Calm and try to speak clearly.
• Know your location, closest cross streets, or nearest landmark or building.
• Know your telephone number.
• Answer the Call Receivers questions and stay on the line until the Call Receiver is finished obtaining the necessary information.
• If you are unsure if this is an emergency, dial 9-1-1 and let the Call Receivers decide what action is necessary.
